WAS pretty... now?

I was doing this mountain scene for a friend's 50th birthday. There was a point when I thought it looked so pretty. I don't think in person the sky looks as ugly as it does here. It is not so spotty in person. I know I need to darken and add detail to the trees on the left side. Should I lift out the darks in the water. I can also lift out the blue in the sky. I was trying to create atmosphere and distance in the mountains, that is that obvious line of nothingness in the middle of the mountain. Does anyone have suggestions? I did enjoy painting it up to this point so I guess I can start over, too.

Thanks. This is where I put down my brushes and walk away.

  1. Liana,
As usual very fresh colors and pleasant. But it looks like you are not 100% sure about it. May be you can do it all over again. If you do that my suggestion would be to have a clear focal point somewhere. I hope it helps.

  2. This is lovely Liana and my only concern would be the sameness of colour throughout the painting. Maybe lifting a bit of the red out of the mountain area would throw them further back? Love the colours and depth of the lake and the sky is just totally interesting!

  3. I would leave it like this, Liana. The distant mysterious sky is such a nice contrast to the more detailed foreground.

  4. Prabal, thank you! You are right. There is not a focal point.

  5. Liz, thanks so much for your help. I went over the red with cool dark green. This has helped.

  6. Marie, you are always so sweet. Thank you. I think I feel like it has become too spotty. It took a turn when I added the blue. My husband doesn't think it is as bad as I do.

  7. Personally, I think it's lovely: I like the softness in the trees and think the water is perfect!! It looks so flat and reflective; it's just right.
    What a great birthday present!
