Colors of Fall

Fall Bouquet, 11x14

A Secret Garden, 6x14

Believe it or not, the colors of fall in Dallas right now are really what you see in A Secret Garden. Inspired by a real garden I found on a walk, this is a plein air study. The blooms are a little embellished, but, it is true, the flowers are much happier now with the high 80 degree days vs. the +100 temps. The encore azaleas are blooming, as are the crepe myrtles and the roses, hibiscuses, inpatients and perennials are all happy. However, the shadows are getting much longer. I walked out in the backyard the other day and noticed I was in the shadow of the house as it stretched far into the yard.

I wanted to share that gorgeous middle photo with the plant alive with the glow of the sunlight.

Fall Bouquet is painted from a bouquet I put together for a school coffee at my house. I couldn't resist using the pumpkin branches or the bright orange and magenta colors.

Thanks to both my blog readers and my email subscribers for your comments on my posts. I love that connection!

  2. So Beautiful! I love the Secret Garden and the fall colors. Though it really looks and feels like autumn here, my neighbor has bright pink stalk-like flowers growing. You'd love them. I've never seen anything like them before. I think I need to snap some photos and post them on my blog...Hmmmmm. Sounds like a plan! Thanks for the inspiration and the lovely painted colors.

  3. Thank you for your compliments. I can't believe you like Secret Garden. I like everything about it, except my painting style. I want for it to look more like a professional artist did it. Liz, since you do watercolors, don't you think it looks amateur?

  11. Lovely work, Liana. Fall always presents such a colorful overture to the winter white that is to follow!

  13. Liana, I came to your blog from hopping various other art blogs. I love your painting style which is evident in "Fall Bouquet", "Cherries" and "Apples, Peaches and Plums", to name a few I recently looked at, and your use of color is what I strive to achieve.

Looking at A Secret Garden, I see your frustration with your painting style. It isn't as polished as your more formal paintings, perhaps because it was done en plein air and maybe done more hurriedly. I'm just guessing here. This has more of a sketch feel to it, more of a study than a finished painting. You can either continue to work on this painting but risk overdoing it (as I've done many times!), or call this one merely a sketch and start fresh with a more formal painting of the subject and take your time in the studio with it. I bet it will turn out fabulous.

Forgive my comments if they are out of line, coming from a total stranger who has never seen your work before.
